Go Google Yourself!

That’s right! You heard me…

Ya got a hot date for tonight. Good for you! What’s the last thing you do before you walk out the door? No, not that-you check yourself out in the mirror. Why? Do your socks match? Are you buttoned or zipped up? Is there any foreign substance on your cheek or chin? What about in your nose? All these tasks are done for one reason-Because (say it with me) -You only get one chance to make a first impression.

It’s the same with your online presence. So go ahead-google yourself-Yes, right now…I won’t peek…I promise…I’ll be here when you get back…Well, how was it? What did you think? Was it everything that you’d thought it would be?

Everyone needs to do a google search on themselves -First your name. Where does it come up on Google? Why does someone else with the same name come out on top of you? Answer: Content. Next google your blog or website (remember-google it, not enter the URL). This is the important part-Not only does your name come up, but whatever text comes after your name or blog name comes next. GET IT? This is prime real estate baby. You only get about three seconds for someone to decide if they want to click on your site or move on. You gotta “make the sale” right then and there. Make sure that your blog name is relevant to your site. And just as important-the text that follows-your “tagline”- hammers home the point. Use keywords in the tagline.

I learned very quickly that I had a useless tagline. What I thought was a cool arty little number (although it is cool and I like it) was really a better fit as the heading on the “About Me” Page where it belongs and not in the most important of spaces. After the blog name-it said nothing. It gave no indication what someone could expect. It gave no sense of urgency, or even a reason why someone would want to click. Use the opportunity you are given to make a difference. “To click or not to click. That will be the question”.

Look at yourself with a most critical eye. See what others are doing. What do you like about their sites. What are they doing right? What are they doing wrong? Then go back to your site, with a better appreciation and a fresh critical look. Is your site boring? Is the content drab? Is it schizophrenic? Is it just a page of ads and flashing banners? If your site doesn’t stand up to your new higher expectations-Then change it. You’ve just raised the bar on yourself and it will make a better experience for all.

You may only get one chance…They may never return…

  • Hi Denis!

This is a great article. I think I will go google myself and see what comes up. I am sure that I need to take a re-look at what text follows my url. I hadn’t thought about doing this so thanks for the helpful tip. :-)

    See you in the webinars!

  • Hello Denis
Excellent advice. I just did as you said and googled my name Joseph C Green and, Hey, I’m listed at No 1,3 and 4. Interesting that my mmbership website is the No 1 and I always use the name ‘Joe Green’ there. I’ve got a lot more content at my membership site but I update my blog more often
Joseph C Green My blog) is 3 and 4

So, is this OK or should I be doing more?
    Best Wishes
    Joe

    Hi Beth:
Thanks for the visit. I just kept chuckling while writing it, and I don’t think it’ll ever get old. I’m a sucker for offbeat humor and bad puns. I’m coming for a visit tomorrow morning. Don’t worry, stay in your jammies, that’s the beauty of cyber visiting. I’m coming to learn about Twitter.
    Thanks

    Hi Joe:
I thought that it was interesting to see ourselves through the eyes of another. That’s what the search did for me. Plus it’s kinda cool to see ourselves listed in Google-out of the millions of people out there. Keep a cup of coffee hot for me, ’cause when Beth gets sick of me, I’ll be sponging off you at your place. Let’s see what I can learn from you…

Thanks guys. From now on, my way of doing things, is to visit and comment FIRST on all the sites of the great folks who have paid me a visit the day before. That’s how I will find you.

You all have inspired me into writing another post…I’m working on it now. Stay tuned…

  • Hi Denis,

I googled my name and am on page three. I guess that is ok since David Smith is a very common name. My blog name is similar to my name but some very different results.

    Very interesting.

  • My name “Rob Abdul” for the last 3 years has been my brand name.

I was so proud when my name appeared in Goggle’s suggestive list.

It may not sound like much but at least 60 to 80 people goggle me a month.

It is nice for the Ego, I must admit!

  • Denis Caron:

    Hi Rob:
